THEME: INTERGENERATIONAL SOLIDARITY (Creating a World For All Ages)

Every Youth is indeed valid as they prove to be the major initiator and implementor of changes bringing about the development of a Society and Country at large.

No wonder, Kailash Satyarthi, in his words had said, “The power of youth is the common wealth for the entire world. The faces of young people are the faces of our past, our present, and our future. No segment in the society can match with the power, idealism, enthusiasm, and courage of the young people.”

Each year a theme is chosen to draw attention to a particular issue for youth such as the high unemployment rate, poor working conditions, and marginalization from decision-making process.

The theme for International Youth Day 2022 is “Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All ages”, and solidarity across generations is key for sustainable development.

The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of the potential of young people for bringing peace and change to the world. Worthy of noting, is a need for this day because alot of youth in the world are struggling with issues ranging from unemployment challenges to the poor education sector, which needs to be addressed.

The reason of which, even as we celebrate the International Youth Day, we should also look into the importance of investing greatly into the minds of our Youth using STEM.

Youths and STEM

STEM is critical in the world as we know it today because the global economy is dependent on it, it’s more than coding and lab coats. It’s the center of manufacturing, food production, health care, and a lot of what we take for granted, but can’t live without. People wonder if it’s so important, why do we need to go on about it? Why do you need to write about it all of the time?

STEM education goes beyond school subjects. It gives a skill set that governs the way we think and behave. Merging science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, STEM education helps youth to solve the challenges the world faces today. In a world that is becoming increasingly complex, where success is driven not only by what you know, but also by what you can do with the knowledge, it is imperative for youths to be equipped with skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information.

The STEM approach to education fosters creativity and divergent thinking alongside fundamental disciplines. It motivates and inspires young people to generate new technologies and ideas. In terms of social awareness, there is a high demand for STEM skills in society.

STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators. Innovation leads to new products and processes that sustain our economy. This innovation and science literacy depends on a solid knowledge base in the STEM areas.

Stem education causes youth to persevere and strive towards excellence, think more creatively and encourages critical thinking amidst youths. Through STEM education youths are encouraged to experiment and learn to worth with technology. Alongside this STEM career creates great opportunities arming youths with Innovative skills
